PRONIA feels honoured to be part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s efforts to raise funds for the Greek volunteer firefighters. Along with all the members of the Australian-Greek community, PRONIA was shocked by the devastating fires during the Greek summer. In particular, we spare a thought for the brave volunteer firefighters who with sacrifice and dedication, confront danger protecting the lives and properties of the Greek people. Australian Greek Welfare Society (AGWS) co-founder and Hon. Life Member Dr Spiro Moraitis passed away on Thursday 7th, September at the age of 90. Dr. Moraitis, together with George Papadopoulos and Nick Polites, founded the AGWS (known today as PRONIA) in 1972. The purpose of AGWS was to vigorously assert the rights of immigrants and their children, with an emphasis on improving services in the fields of education, health, social welfare, childcare and the preservation of the Greek language. Cooking Classes for Youth – Spanish Fiesta

PRONIA was delighted to deliver its second youth activity, a Spanish-inspired cooking class. The class hosted youth aged 18-29 and aimed to promote social connection in a team-building environment to develop practical skills in the kitchen. The night, however, highlighted so much more. The diverse group of participants, with a significant increase in male participation, demonstrated the importance of breaking down traditional gender role stereotypes, namely women’s roles in the kitchen, and recognised cooking and food literacy to be valuable life skills for all people despite their gender.
