Statement from PRONIA

Please find our statement that is to be attributed to PRONIA CEO Sylvia Hadjiantoniou and the PRONIA Board  On Friday 28th March, an incident occurred on our PRONIA premises that impacted on members of our team.  Since then, there have been various comments and articles published concerning PRONIA, and the Federation of the Greek Elderly.  PRONIA and the Federation share a long-standing history. PRONIA has consistently supported the Federation and the Greek comunity and remains dedicated to this commitment.  The Federation always remains welcome at PRONIA.  PRONIA will not be commenting further at this stage.

PRONIA welcomes new leadership with sights set on a positive 2025

PRONIA celebrated its continuing impact in the community at their 52nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) while expressing excitement over its new leadership with an eye towards a fruitful 2025. The organisation met at its Brunswick offices on 25 November, hosting members, board representatives, supporters and Justice Emilios Kyrou. The AGM served as the first under the leadership of new CEO Sylvia Hadjiantoniou, who took over the role from Tina Douvos-Stathopoulos after she concluded her 34-year tenure at PRONIA in April. As part of the 29th Greek Film Festival, PRONIA was thrilled to organise another, exclusive screening for our senior community members. On Thursday, 24th October, attendees gathered at the Pentridge Cinemas in Coburg for a private viewing of the heart-warming Greek romcom Hear Who Is Talking. In celebration of National Carers Week 2024, PRONIA, together with VMCH, Wellways, Carer Gateway, Uniting, MerriHealth, Different Journeys, and Pinchapoo, hosted a special lunch at Hyatt Place, Scoresby. This event was dedicated to acknowledging the incredible, selfless work of our carers and giving them a well-deserved break. Along with a lovely lunch, carers enjoyed an uplifting Laughter Yoga session that filled the room with smiles and joy. It was a heart-warming event that left everyone feeling appreciated and supported.

A Special Day at the Movies for Our Seniors!

In celebration of the 29th Greek Film Festival, PRONΙΑ, as a proud sponsor, organised an exclusive daytime screening for our senior community members. This special event allowed them to enjoy a modern Greek comedy in the company of friends. On Thursday morning, over 140 seniors gathered at the iconic COMO Theatre in South Yarra for the first private screening. The light-hearted Greek romcom “Hear Who Is Talking” had everyone laughing, and in high spirits. We are proud to support carers in our community through a variety of programs, including in-person and telephone support groups, Digital Literacy classes, in-home respite, counselling, and more. Dementia Action Week – Greek Community of Tasmania

We celebrated the Dementia Action Week with the Greek Community of Tasmania at a wonderful event on 29 September at Hellenic House, Hobart. This occasion also marked the one-year anniversary of PRONIA’s services in Tasmania. A highlight of the day was the insightful presentation by Professor James Vickers, Director of the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre at the University of Tasmania as well as the informative Q&A session that followed. PRONIA proudly celebrated the 20th anniversary of its successful Greek Cardiac Rehabilitation Program on Thursday, 19 September at the Treacy Centre, Parkville. This milestone marks two decades of unwavering commitment to supporting Greek-speaking cardiac patients in their recovery and long-term health. Launched on 9 September 2004, in collaboration with Heartbeat Victoria, the Heart Research Centre, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the program remains the only Greek-language cardiac rehabilitation service in Australia. It offers participants culturally and linguistically tailored sessions designed to improve their heart health after a cardiac event. PRONIA has had a long, proud history in advocating for social justice, equality of opportunity for individuals and communities, with the aim of helping to create a stronger, cohesive, and inclusive society for all Australians. It is within this spirit that PRONIA supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the “yes” vote in the upcoming referendum to constitutionally recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as the First Peoples of Australia and a Voice to parliament.
