Centre Based Activity Groups

PRONIA's Centre Based Activity (CBA) groups provides opportunities for isolated elderly to engage in socialisation through group activities and also provides long-day respite services for carers.

There are 15 programs that operate six days a week and our centres operate in the North (Brunswick), West (Sunshine), East (North Balwyn) and South (South Clayton) and they are run by bi-lingual staff.

The CBA's are aimed at supporting elderly to maintain their independence and connection with the community. The service is delivered within a Greek-specific context and in a manner that sensitively acknowledges individual needs and interests.

The CBA's provide:

  • Programs that encourage participation in activities that cater for individual interests and abilities within a person centred care model;
  • Activities that acknowledge Greek-specific customs, traditions and religious celebrations;
  • Opportunities that address the social needs of individuals who are socially isolated;
  • Support with personal care requirements;
  • Specialist support for individuals with dementia

All group participants are invited to enjoy a range of centre and outings-based activities that are coordinated by the centre staff. The activities are aimed at encouraging independence and are underpinned by the principles of active living and positive ageing.

The range of activities offered includes:

Physical activities: walking groups, bowling, cooking, rehabilitation programs, gardening, music & dancing and outings,

Group activities: movies, discussion groups, guest speakers - health literacy presentations, celebration days.

Individual activities: reading, knitting, painting, drawing,

Transport to and from the centre can be provided as required, via taxi. A fee is attached to the service to cover meals and other program expenses.

An additional cost may be charged where a special outings-based activity is arranged. If however participants are experiencing difficulty in meeting this cost, fees can be waived following consultation with the Program Coordinator.
